Made to Order in the UK
All pieces are crafted to order in our Manchester studio, allowing us to produce thoughtfully and avoid overproduction. Sample pieces are kept to a minimum, and any unused materials are recycled into new designs.
We work closely with local British manufacturers, supporting traditional craft and skills. All jewellery is made within our Manchester studio, with casting carried out by our trusted North London foundry partners. Our packaging is produced in Sheffield by specialists in eco-friendly materials, reflecting our commitment to sustainability at every stage.
Materials
At The Winter House, 100% of our metals used are recycled. We source our metals from our long trusted, London based casting foundry and Cooksongold, a supplier who is a certified member of the Responsible Jewellery Council. All off-cuts, old pieces and early design trials are melted down and cast into our new work. Using recycled metal ensures our pieces embody a significantly lighter carbon footprint than jewellery crafted from mined metals.
Every piece of jewellery is hallmarked by the Goldsmiths’ Company Assay Office in London, the birthplace of hallmarking for over 700 years. This legally required process verifies the purity of our precious metals, protecting our clients and ensuring complete trust in the authenticity of each piece. A hallmark is more than a stamp, it is a centuries-old promise of quality, integrity, and enduring craftsmanship.
At The Winter House, we offer lab-grown gemstones as an ethical alternative to mined stones. Physically, chemically, and visually identical to natural gems, they require fewer resources, use less energy, and produce lower emissions, helping us work towards our goal of more sustainable practices.
When we work with natural stones, we work exclusively with conflict-free gemstones, cut and processed in controlled environments where modern equipment and fair employment standards are the norm. We source only from trusted workshops and factories our partners have visited, ensuring stones are handled responsibly and without exploitation. Because the greater ethical challenges often lie in mining itself, we carefully select suppliers who prioritise both people and the environment, whether small-scale artisanal diggers or larger operations required to restore the land. This vigilance allows every gemstone we use to be worn with confidence in an ethically conscious supply chain.
Responsibly Sourced
Materials of The Winter House
Sterling Silver
Our silver is 100% recycled and crafted from 925 sterling silver, an alloy containing 92.5% pure silver. Lightweight yet durable, it is suited to everyday wear. Over time, silver develops a natural patina that enhances its character and depth, though it can always be polished back to a bright shine if preferred.
Gold
Our gold is 100% recycled and highly durable, ideal for everyday wear. Heavier and more resistant to tarnish than silver, it retains its finish over time. Pieces can be made in a variety of carats, with different carat options available on request.
Diamonds
We use both natural and lab-grown diamonds, each carefully selected for quality and integrity. Natural diamonds are sourced responsibly through trusted partners, while lab-grown diamonds offer an ethical, lower-impact alternative. With a Mohs hardness of 10, they are unmatched in durability and made to last a lifetime.
Rubies
Our rubies are responsibly sourced and celebrated for their vivid colour and enduring strength. With a Mohs hardness of 9, they are well suited to everyday wear. Among the most prized are pigeon blood rubies, admired for their rich, deep red hue that has long symbolised passion and vitality.
Sapphires
Our sapphires are responsibly sourced and valued for their rich colour and durability. With a Mohs hardness of 9, they are second only to diamonds in strength, making them ideal for everyday wear. While sapphires are found in a wide spectrum of colours, we have a particular affinity for white sapphires, admired for their clarity and understated elegance.
Garnets
Our garnets are carefully selected for their deep red tones, offering a rich alternative to rubies. With a Mohs hardness of 6.5–7.5, they are durable enough for regular wear while providing a more accessible option without compromising on character or intensity.
